It will give you the opportunity to understand the body further in-depth. Once you do, you can expend less of your energy if you understand the wound or wounds you're treating.
I imagine in your encounter you not only tended to your wounds, but your comrades. As varied of states each of you must've been in, and the order of receiving treatment, you were spent before you attempted to heal yourself. Not only that, you just permitted your magic to spread over their bodies instead of concentrating on individual areas.
